Halar®
(ECTFE)
Fluoropolymer and Coating
Halar®
fluoropolymer is a melt process thermoplastic manufactured
by Ausimont USA, Inc. Halar® is electrostatically
applied in multiple coats to the internal wetted surfaces
of Filtration Systems single filter vessels,
as well as most baskets and accessories, then baked in a controlled
high temperature oven for curing.
|
Because of its composition, HALAR®:
1) promotes a high purity seamless filtering environment;
2) offers a broad range of chemical and thermal resistance
qualities that are useful when filtering certain liquids that are
incompatible with stainless or carbon steel.
Filtration Systems Division of Mechanical Mfg. Corporation
has been qualified by Ausimont to apply HALAR® fluoropolymer
to its products.
- What
Is Halar® Fluoropolymer?
- Halar®
fluoropolymer is essentially a 1:1 alternating copolymer of ethylene
and chlorotrifluoroethylene. It contains about 80% by weight of chlorotrifluoroethylene,
one of the most chemically resistant building blocks that can be used
to make a polymer. CTFE homopolymers are difficult to fabricate into
complex shapes. By copolymerization with ethylene, Halar®
fluoropolymer was developed to possess the chemical resistance of
CTFE based materials with greater "user friendly" qualities.
Why
Use Halar® Fluoropolymer?
Halar® fluoropolymer, as the following data indicates,
is one of the most chemically resistant polymers.
In addition to its high degree of chemical resistance, Halar®
fluoropolymer possesses the following properties that make it suitable
for demanding applications.
- Mechanically
tough with excellent cut-through and abrasion resistance
- High
tensiles and elongation
- Excellent
impact at room temperature and down into the cryogenic
- Dimensionally
stable
- Continuous
use to 200 F.
- Excellent
release properties
- High
purity, does not contaminate high purity fluids.
Halar®
fluoropolymer exhibits outstanding chemical resistance and excellent
barrier properties. It is virtually unaffected by most corrosive
chemicals commonly encountered in industry. Among those substances
that HALAR® fluoropolymer is resistant to are strong
mineral and oxidizing acids, alkalies, metal etchants, liquid oxygen
and essentially all organic solvents.
